Fundamental Training For Badminton

Fundamental Training For Badminton

IntroductionThe type of training used by badminton players is generally related to the standard of the player. For younger players with less well-developed skill levels, most training is likely to be devoted toplaying games. With higher skill levels should come greater dedication to the game andincreased use of the many potential types of training that will help competitive performance.Simply, Badminton can be initially categorized into on-court and off-court work. On courtwork would mean training with badminton movements with a racket and usually (althoughnot always) with a shuttle. Off-court work is usually additional work that has the aim ofenhancing some particular aspect of fitness. After an initial section of warm up and warm down, the purpose of this section is to outline types of training, while a later section will give examplesof how these techniques can be used to enhanced fitness.Warm up & warm downAny exercise is a considerable stress on the human body and the body should be given time toadapt to exercise and also to recover from exercise. Warm-up and warm-down are similar inprinciple and similar exercises can mostly be used for both purposes. Warm-up and warm-downare easily ignored as they may not appear to have a direct bearing on the...

Badminton Tips: Warming Up Before A Match

Badminton Tips: Warming Up Before A Match

A warm up for both training and competition should begin with some light activity to increase blood flow to the muscles. The next phase of the warm-up is to stretch the muscles and joints. This will be achieved initially by passive stretches followed by active stretches specific for the action of badminton. Passive Stretches Here are a selection of stretches that you can use for your badminton warm up. Hold each of the following stretches for 10-20 seconds, and remember to stretch both sides of the body. There are links to more detailed information about each stretch. Back and Forward Neck Stretch — Tuck your chin down until it touches your chest and you can feel tension at the back of your neck. Tip your head to each side slowly until you feel the stretch. ...

Badminton Fitness - Comments & Observations

The sport of badminton requires specific physical and physiology attributes - such as great court speed and agility, with a good background of endurance. Apart from skill (which is a highly important ability), the relative importance of the physiological parameters such as strength, speed, agility and endurance differ in their contributions to making a champion badminton player. The psychological parameters of mental toughness and dedication is also needed in high doses. The table below lists some suggested tests for the different categories of fitness that are important for badminton. This list is not exhaustive, there are many other fitness tests that may be suitable, depending on your situation. Aging and Badminton

Aging and Badminton

I have always struggled with injuries, even in my later junior years I was often sidelined with some small nagging injury, and on one occasion I wound up in the operating room for arthroscopic surgery to deal with a torn meniscus in my left knee.  I’m an extreme example, and as a result I need to be extremely careful about taking care of my body, however the average badminton player can learn from my troubles as well. Ironically enough my problem is my strength.  I have never struggled with putting on muscle, and I have always been quite fast and explosive on the badminton court.  At this point you may be wondering how this is a problem.  The problem with putting on muscle easily with a sport like badminton is that the movements and demands placed on your body as a result of playing badminton causes your body to develop in a lopsided manner.  My left quad is noticeably smaller than my right quad, and as my physiotherapist would testify, my hips, shoulders and basically everything else is unbalanced in some way.  These mismatched body parts have resulted in countless injuries over the years.  Only one has been very serious, but...

New Trend in Badminton World - High Strings Tension

New Trend in Badminton World - High Strings Tension

The professional players of today all seem to have one thing in common, very high string tension in their badminton rackets. Virtually every medal winner has their badminton racket strung at over 30lbs tension, some as high as 36lbs. Another similar trend is in the actual rackets used, with the Armortec series being the most popular with the current best players. The Yonex Armortec rackets are all head heavy balanced, which makes them "high work" rackets, ie, they are the most difficult to use. Now whether or not these professionals are using the same spec rackets that you can buy in the shops is debatable. The string tension is not though. All the players are going for extremely high tension. High tension gives more control. I have seen a few debates on forums about string tension and what it offers. People disagree on this subject. Some argue that low tension gives more control because the shuttle stays in contact with the strings longer. This view has been backed up by a famous ex professional player from the 70's and 80's. I totally disagree with this theory, and the science also disagrees with it. From my own personal experience, high racket...

8 Badminton Techniques to Practice Daily

If you want to improve your game, you should practice these 8 basic techniques. Even if you just play badminton for fun, you can always learn something new to better your performance. 1. Badminton Grip The right grip is your basic foundation for badminton. For more power and accuracy, make sure you are holding the racket correctly. There are 2 main types of grips: forehand and backhand. Use the forehand grip when your shots are in the front of your body, and you hold your hand on the handle as if you where shaking hands. Keep the racket face perpendicular to the floor. When the shot is behind your body, you should use the backhand racket grip. Hold the handle just like you did for the forehand, but then turn the racket counter-clockwise so your thumb is to the left. 2. Badminton Footwork Your opponent will try to keep the shuttle away from you, so be prepared to move around the court quickly and accurate with good footwork. You'll need moves like skipping, shuffling, gliding, lunging and even bouncing. It's up to you how to use them during your game. Always keep your knees slightly bent and ready to move...
