The SEA Games bronze medallists rallied against the Japanese pair, who were hoping to continue their unbeaten run in India after grabbing the India Open Superseries title in May.
However, it was not to be as Shinta and Yao Lei more than held their own to capture the last Grand Prix Gold title on offer for 2011 with a determined 21-17, 21-18 victory.
Maeda-Suetsuna’s loss, coupled with an injury to Thailand’s Porntip Buranaprasertsuk – who won the India Open Superseries women’s singles title – meant there was no repeat champion in this tournament.
There was good news for other top seeds in the doubles competition as Thailand’s Sudket Prapakamol-Saralee Thoungthongkam (right), and Japan’s Naoki Kawamae-Shoji Sato won the mixed and men’s doubles respectively.
Sudket-Saralee were taken to the limit by Indonesia’s Muhammad Rijal-Debby Susanto before pulling through in three games to grab the title.
The experienced pair, who were runners-up at the All England this year, came back from an opening game loss to defeat their opponents 16-21, 21-18, 21-11.
Kawamae-Sato also broke Indonesian hearts when they faced Andrei Adistia-Christopher Rusdianto in the men’s doubles final.
The Japanese pair has had a reasonably good season on the BWF circuit and capped their year off with a brilliant win, taking the crown with a 21-17, 12-21, 23-21victory.
